Great Britain’s Ellie Challis has said her gold medal win in the women’s S3 50m backstroke final was “a dream come true”.
World champion Challis improved on the silver medal she won three years ago in Tokyo with a lifetime best swim of 53.56 seconds.
The 20-year-old finished almost five seconds clear of second-placed Russian Zoia Shchurova with Spain’s Marta Fernandez Infante taking bronze.
“I have been so confident in myself – that was fun. I’m improved so much,” Challis told Channel 4.
She will now look to back up Monday’s dominant performance in the S3 100m freestyle heats on Tuesday.
“Para sport is so different,” added Challis. “We have people dropping in and out of our classifications all the time.
“This is a dream come true.”
